Ava Shamban, MD
Ava Shamban M.D. is a renowned board-certified dermatologist licensed to practice medicine in California, New York and Hawaii. In addition to serving as Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the UCLA-Geffen School of Medicine, she is also owner and director of two practices, AVA MD, in Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, CA. She is not only recognized as the “Extreme Makeover” dermatologist and the resident expert on the Emmy winning daytime talk show, “The Doctors,” but Dr. Shamban is also the author of her book, Heal Your Skin: The Breakthrough Plan for Renewal (Wiley).
As a key opinion leader in her field, Dr. Shamban has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally on topics ranging from medical and cosmetic to laser dermatology. She is a pioneer in developing the multimodal treatment approach to acne, acne scars, pigmentary problems and rosacea. As well as aging and photoaging, that includes the use of laser technology, injectables and at home programs. As a physician interested in teaching she is a member of Allergan’s National Exchange Forum, an instructor for the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Fillers and Injectables course, and a lecturer for CME courses and prominent pharmaceutical companies.
Dr. Shamban graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University before receiving her medical degree from Case Western Reserve Medical School. She completed an internal medicine internship at the Mount Sinai Medical Center and went into practice as a general practitioner in California for two years. She then received a Dermatology Foundation Fellowship for the study of extra cellular matrix proteins, with Dr. Jouni Uitto and under his direction she performed bench research on the expression of the elastin gene in various genodermatoses. Dr. Shamban continued on to complete her dermatology residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 1989 and is currently a member of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery as well as the American Academy of Dermatology and also serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.
As a key opinion leader and an expert injector Dr. Shamban has been a principal investigator on numerous clinical trials for both pharmaceuticals and devices that led to the FDA approval of Oracea, Metrogel, Solodyn, Ziana, Epiduo and Tazorac, as well as Juvederm, Perlane, Dysport, Isolaz, Accent and Photoderm in addition to other clinical trials for acne, rosacea, psoriasis and facial aesthetics. Dr. Shamban established the ATS Clinical Research Center for ongoing clinical research oriented toward medical dermatological conditions, rejuvenation, fillers and toxins. Dr. Shamban is on advisory boards for Allergan, Merz, Medicis, LaViv and Leo Pharma. She is committed to the research and development of new pharmaceuticals and cosmetic treatments to ensure her patients are living life to their greatest potential.
In addition to her new book, Dr. Shamban has also authored numerous publications in medical journals and book chapters including: Cosmetic Dermatology, Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery, Aesthetic Surgery Journal, Facial Plastic Surgery, Journal of Cutaneous Laser Therapy. As well as Dermatologic Clinics on topics ranging from inherited genodermatoses, laser technology, to upcoming innovative cosmetic procedures.
Additionally, she is nationally and internationally recognized as a skin care expert.
